The gorgeous San Juan Bautista State Historic Park is located in the city of San Juan Bautista, on Highway 156. It’s only 7 miles from Hollister, California. San Juan Bautista is a part of a national historic landmark—a 15th century Spanish era mission. This park used to be one of the largest town squares in central California. As you make your way through the park you will gain newfound appreciation and knowledge of the Native America, Spanish, and Mexican heritage of California.
While this park is only 6 acres, it’s rich with history and sure to open everyone’s eyes to the rich history of California.
The Mission San Juan Bautista is still an active Roman Catholic church that’s actually located along the San Andrea Fault. In fact, this church runs so close to the fault that you can literally walk along it. The entire park is located right on the Mission Plaza that’s across from the mission. You’ll love the old hotels and carriage house museum that are filled with antiques. The park also features a bar, hotel, blacksmith shop, stables & hall.
This park is a delightful place to walk around, take in history, and take beautiful pictures. In fact, one of the most beloved features of the park are the old trees that people enjoy taking pictures by. If you’re lucky and get great weather try to take some family pictures.
The park rangers at San Juan Bautista are super friendly and welcoming and are always there to answer questions. Guided tours are available for a small fee that goes toward the park’s preservation. When you visit this park you take a step back in time and truly have an opportunity to enjoy history.
